Lawrence has spent most of the last four years in Washington getting a close-up look at Trump administration.

A graduate of McMaster and Harvard, he has also served as the Globe's bureau chief in the Soviet Union, in Washington under Reagan and Carter, in Montreal and in Ottawa for many years as a columnist. He is the author of 10 books, including two volumes on Canada-U.S. relations, biographies of Jean Chretien, Stephen Harper, Lucien Bouchard, Mikhail Gobachev, hockey star Mario Lemieux and a history of hockey in Russia.
