Conspiracy theories have always lurked in the corners of society but in the internet age these ideas have moved from the shadows into the mainstream.   While the ideas proposed in many conspiracy theories may not resonate with the majority, there are consequences to these beliefs that can negatively impact individuals, groups, and society.  Conspiracy theories can be harmful for public health, global warming, safety, conflict, and political polarization.

Join us for this talk with Dr. Jeremy Cohen as he explores how conspiracy theories work, why some people are prone to believing in them, and how the history of conspiracy theories has roots in antisemitism.

About the speaker:

Dr. Jeremy Cohen is an anthropologist of religion and Assistant Professor at McMaster University in the Department of Religious Studies, where he teaches courses on topics ranging from cults and conspiracy theories to death and dying, and the occult.  His research examines new religious movements seeking radical-longevity and immortality, and the intersections of science, technology, and religion.
