As our students begin their college experiences, they are confronting the recurring dilemmas that define and shape all of our lives: Who am I? What makes me who I am? What is my relationship to others and the natural world? What is my responsibility to others and the natural world? As biologist E. O. Wilson contends in his 2003 book The Future of Life, life is "an insoluble problem, a dynamic process in search of an indefinable goal. [It is] neither a celebration nor a spectacle but rather, as a later philosopher put it, a predicament" (xxii). Human Dilemmas may challenge your conventional assumptions surrounding these predicaments as we focus our attention on interdisciplinary readings, critical thinking, and academic inquiry. Join Mark Youndt, Management & Business, for a journey through the quintessential FYE Scribner Seminar course Human Dilemmas, including anecdotes from the classroom.

Professor Mark Youndt teaches courses in general management and strategy in Skidmore’s Management and Business Department as well as a course called Human Dilemmas in Skidmore’s First-Year Experience. Prior to pursuing his academic career, Professor Youndt worked for Accenture and Sonoco Products, and he has a B.A. in management and economics from Gettysburg College, an MBA from Rollins College, and a Ph.D. in management and organization from Pennsylvania State University.

In addition to his activities at Skidmore, Professor Youndt teaches courses at the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine and he consults and delivers executive education programs to both small and large organizations. His executive education and research activities focus on the areas of strategy, executive leadership development, knowledge management, sustainability, and health care strategy. Professor Youndt has won numerous teaching awards at the undergraduate, masters, and executive levels, and his research has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Learning and Education, Research in Personnel and Human Resource Management, and Journal of Management Studies.  He is also the co-editor of the book Contemporary Issues in Leadership.
