Please join SSU faculty, current students and fellow alumni for a discussion on the crisis of public higher education and its effects on Salem State University.

Due to declining state investment over the past thirty years, public higher education has become more expensive, which has made it difficult for students, particularly racially minoritized students, to graduate.

Additionally, student debt has also become a significant burden, and state disinvestment has resulted in fewer student services and a decline in academic offerings.

This discussion will give alumni the opportunity to reflect on the results of government disinvestment as well as give us the opportunity to converse about ways to act to reverse this trend.

These options could include current legislative efforts around debt forgiveness and increased public funding.

One major such offering is the Fair Share Amendment, which is on the Massachusetts ballot this November. If passed it would raise $1.3 to $2 Billion each year for public transportation and public education.
