This event is part of the Miami-Chautauqua Institution collaboration, made possible thanks to a generous Miami couple dedicated to the pursuit of lifelong liberal arts education. As part of its mission, Chautauqua promotes the "exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life through a program that explores the important religious, social, and political issues of our times." Each summer, two to three Miami faculty spend a week at Chautauqua and deliver a lecture on their area of expertise. These are their lectures.

Climate Change and the Unfolding Water Crisis in the Middle East

Jason Rech, Professor and Chair of the Department of Geology and Environmental Earth Science, will speak about past, present, and future climate change in the Middle East and what it means for water resources and political stability in the region.

Jason Rech is an arid lands geologist who works on climate and environmental change. He has worked extensively in the Middle East and in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, as well as in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia and the American Southwest. He is a National Geographic Explorer and his research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, NASA, the National Geographic Society, and the U.S. State Department.
