This event is part of the Miami-Chautauqua Institution collaboration, made possible thanks to a generous Miami couple dedicated to the pursuit of lifelong liberal arts education. As part of its mission, Chautauqua promotes the "exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life through a program that explores the important religious, social, and political issues of our times." Each summer, two to three Miami faculty spend a week at Chautauqua and deliver a lecture on their area of expertise. These are their lectures.
Putinism and the Past
Russia’s Strategic Use of History in the Age of Putin
Stephen Norris, Professor of History and Director of the Havighurst Center for East European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, will talk about the cultural aspects of Vladimir Putin's authoritarian regime. A central component of Putnism is how Russia's leaders hijack history to serve as a foundation for dictatorship.
Stephen Norris's work studies nationalism and propaganda in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union during the 19th and 20th centuries. He is the author of multiple books, including Stalingrad: Fedor Bondarchuk, part of the "KinoSputnik” series. Dr. Norris previously presented online Russia's Wars Against Ukraine - A Short History, discussing the historical conflicts just after the current war started.
