An electrician by trade, President Lech Walesa ultimately led Poland's successful transition from Soviet-era communism to Western-style democracy as that nation's first freely elected post-Cold War president. Recipient of hundreds of honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, the French Legion of Honor and Time Magazine's Person of the Year, Walesa will reflect in his address on post-Soviet Europe and how events there will shape the futures of the world's democracies.
