Please join the College of Education, Health, & Society Dean Jason Lane for a conversation with Dr. Brody Ruihley, Associate Professor of Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM), Miami alum, Matt Golis '95, and current student, Luke Sawhook '23 about how Fantasy sport has become an industry that has altered the way millions of people consume and enjoy sports. What was once the domain of small friendship groups, has now become an international phenomenon with more than 60 million participants across Canada and the United States, according to the Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association. Today, fantasy sport is part of everything from work-life culture to sports gambling. Learn from our experts about the impact this new pastime is having on sports, culture, and society at large.  Joining the conversation are   

 

Dr. Brody Ruihley is an Associate Professor and Assitant Department Chair of Sports Leadership and Management in the College of Education, Health, and Society at Miami University.  He is one of the leading academic voices examining the fantasy sport industry and its consumers. Dr. Ruihley has written over 45 journal articles and book chapters, presented on the topic in 40+ presentations, and is the co-author of the first academic text on the top titled, The Fantasy Sport Industry: Games Within Games (Routledge, 2014). In addition to his research, Ruihley is a key partner with key fantasy sport organizations like The Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association (FSGA) and the Fantasy Sports Writing Association (FSWA).   

Matt Golis '95 is a serial entrepreneur that has launched companies in the payments and e-commerce industries.  His recent venture GiveGame was an online fundraising platform that leveraged sports and pop culture events to make giving to nonprofits competitive and engaging over social media.  

Luke Sawhook '23 is currently studying Emerging Technology Businesses and Design with a minor in Sports Leadership and Management. His passion is creating content in the world of fantasy sports. While currently employed or partnering with several fantasy sport and sports betting organizations, Luke is aspiring to be a full-time fantasy football analyst.
