What better way to celebrate Stars Wars Day (May the fourth be with you) than with a talk about the stars in our May night sky?  Spring evenings are a great time for looking up into the night sky as the evenings are still dark early, and temperatures are getting warmer. But what are we looking at? Do any astronomical events occur during May?

Join us as Jennifer Laing takes us on a mission where we’ll explore what's up in the night sky (of Southern Ontario) at this time of year. We'll learn about objects we can see with the naked eye - the Moon, some planets, constellations, and a meteor shower! Then, we'll look deeper into space and learn about objects that are above us but can only be seen using a telescope - like other galaxies millions of light years away.

About our speaker:

Jennifer Laing is a MSc student in the Department of Astronomy and Physics and is a planetarium presenter at the W. J. McCallion planetarium on campus. She studies star formation inside galaxies as well as properties of the local environment where galaxies are born, in order to gain insight into galaxy evolution. She holds an Honours B.Sc. in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of Toronto, as well as an Honours B.F.A in graphic design from York University. Her combined interest in science and the arts inspires her to create visuals which help people understand complex ideas and fuels her love of science communication.
