A (Brief) History of Black Holes

The Origins Institute is back with a series of talks that explore the fundamental questions about the universe.

Join Hari Kunduri, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, as he explains what exactly a black hole is, and how we have come to have a reasonable theoretical understanding of objects that cannot be seen or heard.

Dr. Kunduri will give a short overview of general relativity, and how black holes arise in this context. He will also discuss the classic black hole ` no-hair theorems' which are the culmination of work over the last 4 decades by many physicists and mathematicians, including Stephen Hawking and the late Canadian-South African physicist, Werner Israel. He will conclude with an outline on why black hole research remains at the forefront of progress in many areas.

A Q&A session will take place after the formal presentation so feel free to submit your questions about black holes in advance.
