Furman University

MLK Community Virtual Breakfast

with Jonathan Kubakundimana '16
Program Manager of the Equal Justice Initiative

Join us for Furman University's annual Community Breakfast honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year's event will be held virtually and is open to Furman alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of the University.

This year's featured speaker is Jonathan Kubakundimana '16. Kubakundimana is a program manager of the Equal Justice Initiative and is on the frontlines in the fight for racial justice in America. His work focuses on advancing an understanding of how the criminal justice crisis is rooted in America’s history of racial injustice, and the collective need to truthfully face that history and its legacy. At EJI, he has been involved in the research, writing, and community outreach related to developing projects that address the legacy of native genocide, slavery, lynching, and racial segregation, which shapes many issues today. Over time that has included producing publications, erecting historical markers, producing documentaries (True Justice) and films (Just Mercy), holding lectures, and contributing to the design and construction of the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.

Coming of age in Kigali, Rwanda, in the aftermath of the Genocide against Tutsis, Kubakundimana developed a commitment to social transformation through his work with other survivors to confront the legacies of colonialism and genocide ideology through traditional storytelling, theatre, and arts.

Space for this event is limited. Please register in advance.

This year's virtual event is sponsored by Furman University and the Alpha Phi Alpha Greenville Foundation, Inc.
