Is your school's reading block starting to feel like all drill and no thrill?

Essential skills like phonics and decoding teach students how to read the "sheet music"—but as school librarians, it’s our job to show them the beauty of the symphony!

The Science of Reading gives students the skills to read; cultivating a love for books gives them the will to read. You don't have to choose between the science and the magic.

Join two veteran school librarians for a fast-paced, 30-minute masterclass packed with actionable strategies to bridge the gap between hard data and reading delight.

Learn how to collaborate with classroom teachers, maximize your library's impact, and put the joy back on the lesson plan—without adding to your workload.

Yapha Mason is the Director of Programs and Operations for BookBreak. She was a school librarian for 28 years in California, Texas, Massachusetts, and New York. While she spent most of that time at the elementary level where she loved reading aloud with fun voices, she has experience in middle and high school libraries as well.

Yapha has had the honor of serving on several national committees, including the Newbery Medal Committee (twice), the Children's Literature Legacy Award, and Notable Computer Software for Children. She reads books like she breathes air, switching from genre to genre (except horror). Her current favorites are middle grade fantasy, adult romance, and anything with time travel or a time loop.

Yapha was fortunate to have spent the bulk of her career at a school that allowed her to bring in authors every year, and is grateful for the opportunity to help students around the country hear from amazing authors and illustrators.

Reba Gordon is a School and District Success Specialist and Special Projects Coordinator with BookBreak, which means she gets to use every single one of her 25+ years of experience as a school librarian in supporting you and the BookBreak team! She has worked with students in Kindergarten through 12th grade to promote and strengthen literacy and a love of reading by connecting authors with readers. Reba is also a co-founder of an author festival with over 45 authors and 6,000 attendees.

Reba has presented on establishing a culture of reading and library best practices all over the country. In her spare time, she can be found reading at least two (sometimes three!) books at the same time.
