Miami Presents: A Taste of Peru sponsored by the Latin@ Alumni Group
Join Jacqueline Rioja Velarde, Associate Director of Miami's Center for American and World Cultures and Alexandra Anaya Green '06, Chair of the Latin@ Alumni Association since 2018, on Saturday, July 24 at 5:00 p.m. for a Taste of Peru sponsored by the Latin@ Alumni Group! Jacqueline will give a demonstration of how to make the famous Peruvian Pisco Sour drink as well as a discussion of its cultural significance and history.
M. Cristina Alcalde, Miami's new Vice President of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, will also be joining the event. A native of Peru, she will share about herself and her role with the university.
Students Marianna Gay and Emily Murillo of the UNIDOS student organization will be joining the webinar as well. UNIDOS's mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of diversity on campus through the celebration of Latinx and Hispanic culture. They will share about the student organization and their upcoming #moveinmiami fundraiser campaign to raise funds for the UniDiversity scholarship. You can donate early here.
Want to follow along and make your own Pisco Sour during the demonstration? The following ingredients are what you will need…
• 15 ice cubes
• 6 tbsp. Pisco Quebranta
• 2 tbsp. lemon juice
• 2 tbsp. sugar syrup
• 1 tbsp. egg white
• 2 drops Angostura bitters, to finish
• Cinnamon (optional)
About Alexandra Anaya Green '06
Alexandra Anaya Green is a Miami merger class of '06. She was active as a board member of ALAS for her time at Miami and a founder of the Latin based multicultural sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma Inc. She is co-founder of Greenhouse Collective Works LLC creating advertisement materials and developing networks that promote AfroLatino identities. Alexandra has been lead in creating the MU Latino Alumni Association since 2018. Uniting alumni in creative ways and celebrating each other's achievements is the goal of the association.
About Jacqueline Rioja Velarde
Jacqueline Rioja-Velarde coordinates the Latin American and Caribbean Festival and Cesar Chavez program. She served as president of the Association of Latin American Faculty and Staff and represents Miami on the Latino Leaders Collaborative Initiative of Southwest Ohio. She also helped start “Latinas in Ohio” to provide advocacy, mentorship and education, and she serves on several committees and councils that advocate for people with disabilities.
