Miami Presents: Miami in World War II: The Carl Lavin Story

Carl Lavin was a high school senior when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He turned 18 in 1942 and entered Miami as a Freshman that fall, only to enter active duty in 1943. Carl's son, Frank Lavin will discuss his time at Miami as the U.S. entered the war, drawing on his book "Home Front to Battlefront." "Home Front to Battlefront" is the story of Carl Lavin's journey from Miami through the battlefields of Europe and back to Miami for graduation. A featured book of Ohio University Press, his book traces the timeless story of a college student coming to terms with the path to adulthood amidst the turmoil and carnage of war. 

Ambassador Lavin's story was originally part of programming for the exhibition, Bearing Witness: The Holocaust and Jewish Experience at Miami University, co-sponsored by Hillel at Miami University and the Walter Havighurst Special Collections & University Archives. The exhibition ran from November 2019 to October 2020.

Frank Lavin served on the White House and National Security Council staff, as well as service as Ambassador and Undersecretary. Frank currently helps U.S. brands sell into China via e-commerce.
