Miami Presents: Reimagining the American Street

For more than 15 years, Winter College has provided the opportunity to relive the Miami Experience by returning to the classroom for thought-provoking lectures from Miami’s top faculty and experts. This year, we’re bringing the Miami Experience to you virtually.  Join us at this page for the following special presentation:

Streets connect people and places, and we navigate them daily. For the past century roadways have been regulated and designed as transport infrastructure for cars. But streets are also among our most extensive and heavily used public spaces. As we confront the challenge of sustainable development, many cities are asking a simple but profound question: What (and who) should streets be for? Geographers and other social scientists are rethinking mobility, not just as movement but also social relationships with political and ethical dimensions. Emerging theories of "mobility justice" parallel work by planners and transportation advocates to remake vehicular thoroughfares as Complete Streets accessible for all users of all ages and abilities. This talk will explore how reimagining mobility and the street can help us remake the places we call home (including Oxford, Ohio) one block at a time.

MEET THE FACULTY

Dr. David Prytherch
Professor, Geography

Dr. David Prytherch is Professor in the Department of Geography, where he advises and teaches in Miami's Urban and Regional Planning major. He has a BS in Geography from Penn State and MA and PhD from the University of Arizona. He is an urban geographer interested in planning and sustainability with recent books including Law, Engineering, and the American Right-of-Way: Imagining a More Just Street (2018, Palgrave). He serves on Oxford City Council and Miami's Climate Action Steering Committee, and enjoys the carbon freedom of living in a walkable and bikeable community like Oxford.
