JEFF PEGUES '92

Since joining CBS News, Pegues has led the Network's coverage of some of the biggest stories of the last decade. Pegues has also become one of the preeminent journalists on the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. His latest book, "Kompromat: How Russia Undermined American Democracy," investigates how Russian President Vladimir Putin's hackers poked into U.S. voter databases and what is happening now to shore up election systems in states across the country.

Pegues has provided extensive reporting on the conflict between the black community and police, including recent police actions and Justice Department investigations in Baltimore and Ferguson, and has authored a book on the issue, "Black and Blue: Inside the Divide Between Police and the Black Community." Pegues is the recipient of three Emmy Awards, numerous local and national Emmy Award nominations, the Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, and in 2017 was part of the CBS News team that earned an Edward R. Murrow Award.

Pegues has more than two decades of reporting experience that includes various presidential elections, natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, active shooter events and terrorist attacks. Prior to joining CBS News Pegues spent nearly 10 years at WABC-TV in New York. Previously, Pegues was a weekday anchor and reporter at WBAL in Baltimore. He also anchored the top-rated evening newscasts at WSVN in Miami in the late 1990s.

Pegues is a proud graduate of Miami University of Ohio where he was a scholarship football player and starting wide receiver in the early 1990s. He was the commencement speaker in Oxford in 2019 and, in January 2020, he was named to the Miami University Board of Trustees. Pegues went to high school in Westport, Connecticut where he was an All-State sprinter and All-Conference running back on the football team. Prior to moving to Connecticut Pegues lived overseas in France, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Zaire and the Philippines.

HOWARD KLEIMAN, PhD.

Dr. Howard Kleiman joined the Mass Communication program (now the Media and Culture area) in Miami’s Department of Communication and Theater in 1983.  During his 37 year career at Miami, Kleiman served as the director of the  Media and Culture program and as the acting department chair on two different occasions.    He also co-developed and led Miami’s Inside Washington and Inside Hollywood programs.  Following his retirement from full-time teaching, Kleiman’s desire to remain connected with students has prompted him to continue to teach one course a semester.

Dr. Kleiman’s research and teaching interests are focused in electronic media policy and regulation, First Amendment issues, and broadcast journalism.  His articles have appeared in various publications, including Journalism Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Communication Law and Policy, the Australian Journalism Review, and The Encyclopedia of Television.  In 1994 Kleiman received the first faculty fellowship awarded by CNN and spent a summer at the network serving as a news writer and producer.

Before pursuing a career in higher education, Kleiman worked in video production in the Pacific Northwest and served as a VISTA volunteer working in media production for the U.S. Public Health Service in Anchorage, AK.  He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana, a master’s from Boston University and a doctorate from the University of Oregon.  Kleiman is married to Irene Lang Kleiman (Miami MS ’86) and has two children, Joshua and Carly (Miami BS ‘12) three dogs and one cat (none of whom went to Miami); and an unbending—and finally vindicated—allegiance to the Chicago Cubs.
