Dr. James Walden will join us to shed some light on the topic of cybersecurity, focusing on its relevance to elections. This discussion will focus on common cybersecurity threats that can affect individuals and strategies to ensure safety. Dr. Walden will also explore some common cybersecurity concerns about the security of ballots, including the influence of artificial intelligence on election security, as well as issues related to the trustworthiness of voting machines and potential issues surrounding the security of state voter lists.

Dr. James Walden is the founding Director of the Center for Cybersecurity and Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Miami University. He joined the university in 2023, bringing 25 years of academic and industrial experience in cybersecurity. He has developed two cybersecurity degree programs, two dozen courses, and helped develop the first cybersecurity curricular guidelines in 2017. He has a Ph.D. and M.S. from Carnegie Mellon University and a B.S. from Miami University. After receiving his Ph.D., he worked at Intel in roles including both cybersecurity and software engineering.

His research interests include applications of AI to cybersecurity, software security, the security of the software supply chain, election security, and cybersecurity education. He has published widely in software security and four of his research papers have received awards. Recent research projects include an in-depth analysis of the software engineering and security practices of the OpenSSL software library, the creation and evaluation of a chatbot for teaching secure programming, and a large-scale analysis of orphan vulnerabilities in the software supply chain.
