Miami Presents: Lesser-Known Lore and Legend: Old-School Miami Mysteries

A professor of chemistry and physics found dead in his lab.  The Bishops rest in peace… somewhere.  And what’s the story about Ogden Wall?  Join us for tales of lesser-known Miami lore with campus history buffs Stephen Gordon ’75, MA ‘81, Administrator, McGuffey House and Museum, and Donna Boen ‘83, MTSC ’96, Editor of the Miamian alumni magazine.

Henry Snyder was beloved by Miami students and faculty, leaving campus shocked when he was found dead in his Brice Hall laboratory on the second day of classes in 1898, an empty beaker next to his body. Was it suicide or murder?

Miami’s first president and his wife, Robert Hamilton Bishop and Ann Ireland Bishop, had been interred since their nearly simultaneous deaths in 1855 on grounds of the Farmers’ College in Cincinnati where Bishop had taught after his dismissal from Miami. In 1959, their bodies were returned to Oxford to be reburied in unmarked graves. Steve is certain he knows where those graves are.
