Join us for an interdisciplinary conversation with the James and Beth Lewis Professor of History, Kimberly Hamlin, Ph.D. and Curator of Exhibitions at the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum (RCCAM), Jason E. Shaiman, about some of Ohio’s most notable women artists and the world around them at the turn of the 20th century.  Dr. Hamlin and Jason will provide some historical context for RCCAM's Fall exhibit, “A Golden Time: Turn of the Century Ohio Women Artists”.  Their conversation will focus on women's changing roles in Ohio and beyond in the early 1900s.  In addition to women and the arts, themes will include women’s suffrage, women and politics/reform, women and education, and women and family life.  

Kimberly A. Hamlin, Ph.D. is the James and Beth Lewis Professor of History at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She teaches classes on the history of women, gender, sex, and medicine in the U.S., as well as the popular course #MeToo: A Cultural History. She is the author of two books on the history of women in America and the recipient of numerous prizes and research fellowships including the Public Scholar Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  A regular contributor to the Washington Post and other media, Hamlin also lectures widely about the history of women as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians.  Hamlin’s most recent book, Free Thinker: Sex, Suffrage, and the Extraordinary Life of Helen Hamilton Gardener (2020), tells the remarkable story of the “fallen woman” who reinvented herself and became the suffragists’ lead negotiator in Washington, D.C., credited with securing Congressional passage of the 19^th Amendment. 

Jason E. Shaiman, Curator of Exhibitions, came to the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum (RCCAM) in August 2010 after working in several curatorial positions over 12 years at the University of South Carolina’s McKissick Museum. Since coming to MUAM, Shaiman has curated, co-curated, and served as project manager for more than 70 exhibitions, including those that celebrate diversity and inclusion, with a focus on African-American culture and history, Native American culture, and women artists.
